Golconda, Royal Tombs

The eastern provinces of the Deccan were ruled from Golconda by the Qutb Shahis for almost 200 years. The founder of this line, Sultan Quli, achieved significant military victories but neither he, nor his successor Jamshid formally declared autonomy. Golconda reached the height of its power in the mid-16th century under Ibrahim Qutb Shah who was also the first great patron of the arts. The greatest achievements in art and architecture however, were during the reign of his successor Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. The magnificent tombs of the Qutb Shahis are laid out in a walled garden necropolis outside Golconda.
